"The Blog tells the story of Fracking (an oil drilling method) and its devastating effects in other parts of the county. This may be our future in NYC that can effect millions of residence including many of you. The Delaware River Basin Commission approved request to allow additional natural gas exploratory wells in Wayne County, PA on July 23rd. The drilling method injects water, sand and hundreds of harmful chemicals deep into the earth to break down the oil causing a mini earthquake which can easily leak into our water supply causing long term harmful effects."

"Please find out more in the links below and pass the word along and lets puts some serious pressure to our local governments. This is no small thing. NY's representative skipped an important voting meeting because the budget cuts wouldn't allow them to travel to the meeting site.
What an excuse to miss an important vote."

News from First Lady Michelle Obama on her childhood obesity prevention campaign, "Let's Move!" 10 am live chat Tuesday, July 13th 2010 at www.letsmove.gov

"Good afternoon,

As a mother, I know there is nothing more important than a child's health. But today, obesity threatens the health of one out of three American children. That's why we launched Let's Move! -- a nationwide effort to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.

Today I'm excited to introduce the new and improved LetsMove.gov -- an online resource for parents, teachers and community leaders to help our children eat better and become more active:

Tomorrow, I'll be hosting a live chat at 10 a.m. EDT to talk about

Let's Move!

and answer your questions about the initiative.

Here are a few new features on the site that you should check out:

Ever since reading the article written by Eileen Z. Fuentes at the Uptown Collective, CHALK's program manager Stephanie has had cravings for mangoes that have helped her meet her fruit serving recommendations for a day. Check out Eileen's article that praises the mangoes available in our neighborhoods, and the  definition she gives us of "SOUL Food".

“Live your Life” with a New Greenmarket in the Heights

July 6, 2010

 greenmarketgreens.JPG

There’s more “green” coming to Washington Heights and Inwood this summer, and that’s a very good thing. GrowNYC (which runs Greenmarket), NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center are bringing a new farmers’ market to the communities of Upper Manhattan.  The market will be managed by GrowNYC, a city-wide environmental organization and is one of nearly 50 markets operated by the organization locally. This exciting new outdoor market will be located on Fort Washington Ave. between 168th and 169th streets, open every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting July 6th through November. In addition to its food offerings, the market will host cooking demonstrations, nutritional counseling, kids’ games and health-related outreach events. This will be WaHI’s third farmers’ market, a testament to the demand for and resources behind healthy, local, and eco-conscious living.
