Burn Calories, Not Electricity!

Eco-sustainability intiative of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Encourages People to Take the Stairs if you can with NYC DOHMH signs

June 8, 2011

takethestairs.jpg

NYPgreen’s Wellness Taskforce helped launch a "Take the Stairs" campaign at the NYP/Columbia, and most recently at the NYP/Weill Cornell campus.  The signs help encourage people to use the stairs throughout the day to save electricity, and to promote physical activity. The campaign uses NYC Department and Health and Mental Hygiene's "Burn Calories, Not Electricity" signs.  The signs tie into Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030 - an agenda outlining steps to a greener New York City.  The motivational stair messages are used with permission from Columbia University's Be Fit to Be'ne'Fit program. Their website offers tips for leading a healthy life.

At the Columbia campus, a 3 month follow-up evaluation of the campaign showed that 2 out of 3 intervention sites showed a statistically significant increase in stair usage among patients and staff.
CHALK (Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids), a collaboration between Community Pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and the community  initiated and implemented this campaign at Columbia, and supported the expansion to Weill Cornell.

As of last month, signage is posted near the K and Payson elevator banks of the
at the Weill Cornell Campus, as well as adjacent staircases.

CHALK chairs the Wellness Task Force of NYPgreen, providing leadership, staff and funding for these intitiatives.

NYC OPENS COOLING CENTERS ON JUNE 8 & 9

Cooling Center info below

June 8, 2011

And don't forget the habit of the month... Drink water!

"The first heat wave of the season has arrived in New York City. Temperatures will climb into the 90s on Wednesday and will remain in the mid- to high 90s through Thursday.

Cooling Centers: New York City cooling centers will open Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9 until further notice to help New Yorkers beat the heat. Call 311 or use the cooling center finder to find a cooling center near you.

Conserve Energy: During periods of extremely hot and humid weather, electricity use rises, which can cause power disruptions. Use air conditioners only when you're home, and only in rooms you're using. If you want to cool your home before you return, set a timer that turns on no more than 30 minutes before you arrive. Turn off nonessential appliances.

Health & Safety: Stay out of the sun if possible and remember to drink plenty of water. Check on neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Registration is now open for the Municipal Art Society's Livable Neighborhoods Program on Saturday June 18th from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM at Hunter College.

The Livable Neighborhoods Program (LNP) is a free, day-long workshop series offered by MAS and Hunter College’s Center for Community Planning and Development. It is designed to provide communities with the resources needed to transform local vision into effective plans. Hundreds of New Yorkers have participated in the program since it started in 2007.

Its components include:

  • a day of free training taught by committed and experienced community leaders and government representatives on a variety of topics including zoning, community organizing, 197-A planning and much more;
  • an online toolkit on planning topics relevant to New York City neighborhoods;
  • and an ongoing, web-based “practitioners network,” designed to facilitate an exchange of information and ideas among people who go through the program.

Learn more about the program and how to register. And, please forward this email to others who you think would enjoy and benefit from this day of training.

All the best,

Summer Camp Resource List

a short list of potential resources for summer camps that have a healthy lifestyles theme to them

June 1, 2011

Click for a short list of potential resources for summer camps that have a healthy lifestyles theme to them in Washington Heights/Inwood. Some are free, some have costs. Note that this list may not include all- just ones we came across and not all programs may be offering spots. But it may be worth contacting them. If we left you out, let us know and we'll add you.

Summer Camp Resource List 2011.pdf

 "This July we’re launching the Summer Running and Community Engagement (R.A.C.E.) Program, a leadership development opportunity for girls new to running and entering their senior year of high school. We’re targeting residents of Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx, areas affected greatly by both health and economic disparity, but welcome applications from motivated teens attending a NYC public high school in any borough.

After training with an NYRR coach, participants will be able to complete their first 5K race by the end of August. In addition, they will learn from guest speakers about health issues affecting many of the city’s lower-income communities and plan a service project of their choosing that directly addresses one of these issues. Successful completion of the program and at least 80% attendance at all practices will secure a $1000 college scholarship for each girl.

The Summer R.A.C.E. Program flyer and application are below for your easy distribution. You may also find details about the program and about NYRR Youth and Community Services at www.nyrrf.org. Please consider sharing this information with any affiliated youth organizations or with teens directly. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2011.

Learning how to Ride a Bike

training workshop on how to set up and teach skill activities in the Bike Driver’s Ed

June 1, 2011

Want to bring an innovative program to your school or organization that shows kids how to use the cleanest, greenest, most active and economical transportation available?      On June 9, 2011 (Chancellor’s Conference Day) Bike New York will be offering a bike skills curriculum training to teachers or anybody who works with kids and want to bring bike programming to their school or youth program.    Teachers and schools that have used our bikes and curriculum were recently featured in a New York Times article.   Most kids enjoy cycling, and our curriculum, Bike Driver’s Ed, is a great way to introduce them to cycling and to show them how to do it safely and confidently.    The training workshop will show teachers how to set up and teach skill activities in the Bike Driver’s Ed curriculum, including teaching someone to ride for the first time, as well as essential traffic safety and injury prevention skills.   Teachers will receive a free copy of the curriculum and other resources on a cd-rom.   Bike New York has a limited number of adult bikes available to loan out for the June 9 training workshop.   People who want to borrow one of our bikes should RSVP to me at 212-870-2091, or to rconroy@bikenewyork.org.

The below flier has details about time and location of the June 9 training workshop.   Please forward this to your educators or members.
