"Healthy Start   Poll: Majority believe "personal choices" are behind obesity
Data from a Reuters/Ipsos online survey indicate that 61% of adults believe personal choices about food and exercise play key roles in the obesity epidemic, and 49% of respondents said they favor higher health insurance costs for obese patients. Researchers found that 52% of respondents support government interventions to address obesity, while 48% oppose it, but 87% said they support requiring schools to promote 30 minutes of daily exercise. Health Commentary has been focused on the challenge of obesity for over a decade. The facts have been clear. But the will to deal effectively with this crisis has been spotty at best. The costs are rising – in financial, human, social and cultural capital – and weighing us down in a thousand different ways. What will it take to effectively respond?"

Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation

IOM Report Identifies Key Obesity-Prevention Strategies to Scale Back 'Weight of the Nation'

May 10, 2012

Radio program on The Diane Rehm Show. http://thedianerehmshow.org

"More than one-third of adults in the U.S. and nearly 17 percent of the nation’s children are obese. Obesity’s human toll includes diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some cancers. Relative medical costs of the obese are estimated to be up to 100 percent higher than for Americans of healthy weight. A new report by the Institute of Medicine warns these social and economic costs will increase in the coming years unless we do more to prevent people from becoming overweight -- especially young people. And researchers say a real solution will require leadership from educators to employers to the president. Diane and her guests discuss America’s obesity epidemic.

Participate in Youthbucks/Farmers' Market Visit

(invitation from Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer)

April 29, 2012

(invitation from Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer)

“Youthbucks is a free program from my office, in collaboration with Go Green and the NYC Department of Health, designed to encourage school-aged youth ages 4-17 to make healthy food choices through coordinated field trips to farmers markets in East Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood.  In 2011, 4,000 school-aged children participated in the program and we have set an ambitious goal of 6,000 youth for 2012.  I hope that your organization will join us in meeting this goal by participating in this year’s program.

Schedule Your Field Trip Today! Scheduling a field trip is easy!  Trips can be scheduled right away beginning July through November 2012 and my office will coordinate everything.  Simply designate a point of contact from your organization and we will work with your organization to schedule a convenient date, time, and market location for your trip with farmer’s market operators Harvest Home and GrowNYC-Greenmarket.

Email Kate Spaulding from my office at kspaulding@manhattanbp.org to register and to schedule your organization for a farmer’s market visit.  You can also call her at 212.669.2094, though email is preferred.  As a reminder, participating organizations are responsible for coordinating travel for all field trips and securing the necessary permission slips from parents.

The Youthbucks Program has created a model where youth can learn more effectively about the benefits of healthy eating and embracing a healthier lifestyle at a young ageWe look forward to the youth from your organization participating in this year’s program so please contact my office at 212.669.2094 if there are questions and to schedule your trip.”
